Eleuthera

Eleuthera is a 100-mile-long sliver of an island about two and a half hours by yacht from Nassau, best known for one thing above all: pink sand beaches. Harbour Island, just off its northern tip, is the headline draw, a colonial village on a three-mile pink-sand beach that regularly gets compared to St. Barths or Nantucket. The rest of the island moves at a much slower pace, with quiet fishing settlements, dramatic Atlantic-facing cliffs, and some of the best drift snorkeling in the Bahamas.

We recommend Eleuthera for guests who want the beach itself to be the main event, not just a stop along the way, paired with real reef and wreck diving at the Devil’s Backbone off Spanish Wells.

Why Charter Eleuthera

  • Pink Sands Beach. Harbour Island’s three-mile stretch is one of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean, and one of the few pink sand beaches anywhere in the world.
  • Real reef and wreck diving. The Devil’s Backbone off Spanish Wells has claimed ships for centuries, now one of the Bahamas’ better wreck and reef dive sites.
  • Current Cut. A narrow tidal channel that turns into one of the best drift snorkels in the Bahamas on the right tide.
  • A dramatic coastline. The Glass Window Bridge is the narrowest point in the Bahamas, Atlantic swell crashing in on one side, calm turquoise Exuma Sound on the other.
  • A slower pace than Nassau or the Exumas. Small colonial towns, working fishing settlements, and far fewer charter yachts around.

Getting to Your Eleuthera Yacht Charter

Most Eleuthera charters start one of two ways:

North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) – the standard embarkation point for a Harbour Island-focused charter, a short ferry or water-taxi hop from the airport over to Harbour Island itself.

Governor’s Harbour Airport (GHB) – the better option if your itinerary runs further south along the island, toward Hatchet Bay, Tarpum Bay, or Cape Eleuthera.

Nassau – many charters that pair Eleuthera with the Exumas simply start in Nassau and cruise across, about a two and a half hour run to North Eleuthera.

Your broker will match the embarkation point to how much of the island you actually plan to see, Eleuthera is long, and running the whole length in one week is rarely the right call.

Where You’ll Go: Eleuthera

Harbour Island & Dunmore Town

Harbour Island is the reason most guests ask for Eleuthera by name. Pink Sands Beach runs the full three miles of its Atlantic side, and Dunmore Town, the colonial settlement on the harbour side, is full of pastel cottages, boutique hotels, and some of the best restaurants in the Out Islands. It’s consistently compared to St. Barths or Nantucket, and it earns the comparison. Don’t miss a golf-cart afternoon through Dunmore Town, it’s the easiest way to see the town properly.

Spanish Wells & the Devil’s Backbone

Spanish Wells is a tight-knit fishing community at Eleuthera’s northern tip, and the gateway to the Devil’s Backbone, a reef system that has wrecked ships for centuries and now makes for some of the better wreck and reef diving in the Bahamas. Passage through the Backbone itself is technical enough that most charters take on a local pilot rather than run it themselves.

Current Cut

Current Cut is a narrow tidal channel between Eleuthera and Current Island, and one of the best drift snorkels in the Bahamas when the tide is running. Fish stack up in the current in numbers you won’t see at a normal reef stop, it’s worth timing your visit around the tide table rather than just stopping in on the way past.

Glass Window Bridge

The Glass Window Bridge is the narrowest point in Eleuthera, a natural land bridge where deep-blue Atlantic swell crashes in on one side and calm, turquoise Exuma Sound sits flat on the other. It’s a striking photo stop rather than a place to anchor, best seen by tender or as a shore excursion.

The Eleuthera land bridge, also known as the Glass Window Bridge, is a natural limestone arch that spans across Queen's Highway, connecting the northern and southern parts of Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. The bridge provides a striking visual contrast between the dark blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calm turquoise waters of the Exuma Sound on the other.

Governor’s Harbour

Governor’s Harbour is Eleuthera’s largest town, with Victorian-era houses on Buccaneer Hill and Lighthouse Point (French Leave Beach) just south of it, a quieter, more local alternative to Harbour Island’s pink sand. Good for provisioning if your itinerary runs the length of the island.

Pairing Eleuthera With a Longer Charter

Eleuthera is long enough, and far enough from the Exumas, that we rarely recommend building a full week around it alone. Most guests pair a few days in Harbour Island and Spanish Wells with a longer Exumas or Nassau charter, using the roughly two-and-a-half-hour crossing from Nassau to link the two.

Eleuthera or the Exumas?

Clients often ask whether to spend their week in Eleuthera or the Exumas. They’re different trips: Eleuthera is one long island built around a handful of standout stops, Harbour Island’s beach, Spanish Wells’ diving, the Glass Window Bridge, while the Exumas are a 120-mile chain of cays with far more anchorages to move between.

As a rule of thumb: choose Eleuthera if a genuinely exceptional beach and a slower pace matter more than covering a lot of ground. Choose the Exumas for the classic multi-stop Bahamas week, swimming pigs included. Many of our longer charters do both, a few days in each, linked by the short crossing from Nassau.

10 Good to know

Frequently asked questions.

What’s the best time to charter Eleuthera?
Eleuthera follows the same Bahamas-wide dry season as the rest of the archipelago – December through April, with April standing out for calm seas and lighter crowds. See our full month-by-month Bahamas timing guide for the details.
Is Harbour Island the same as Eleuthera?
Harbour Island sits just off Eleuthera’s northern tip and is usually reached by a short ferry or water-taxi from North Eleuthera Airport. It’s technically a separate island, but almost every Eleuthera charter includes it, it’s the headline draw, home to Pink Sands Beach and Dunmore Town.
Can I combine Eleuthera with the Exumas?
Yes, and it’s the most common way we build an Eleuthera charter. The crossing from Nassau to North Eleuthera is about two and a half hours, so pairing a few days in Eleuthera with a longer Exumas week is straightforward.
How do I get to Eleuthera?
Fly into North Eleuthera Airport for a Harbour Island-focused charter, Governor’s Harbour Airport if your itinerary runs further south, or start in Nassau and cruise across.
How much should I budget for an Eleuthera yacht charter?
See our full guide to Bahamas yacht charter costs, APA, and taxes for a complete breakdown, then tell us your guest count, dates, and how much of Eleuthera versus the Exumas you want to see, and we’ll give you a realistic range.
