Should I buy charter cancellation insurance?

We recommend it, and for Bahamas summer and fall bookings we recommend it strongly. Cancellation and curtailment insurance protects your charter fee if illness, travel disruption, or other events force you to cancel or cut the trip short.

Charter contracts have firm cancellation terms because the owner holds the yacht exclusively for you; past certain dates, payments are not refundable. Insurance is the clean answer to that risk, and it costs a small fraction of the charter fee.

Your broker can point you to suitable trip insurance when you book. It pairs with the hurricane terms in the contract itself, which we cover in what happens if weather affects our charter? If you are looking at summer or fall dates, our guide to chartering the Bahamas during hurricane season explains how the insurance and the contract terms work together.
