One thing to check before you book: wifi on a spec sheet does not always mean Starlink. Some boats use a cellular router instead, which works in Nassau but fades between the cays. We ask the yacht which one it runs.

What Starlink Internet Changed on a Bahamas Charter
Starlink satellite internet took video calls at anchor from barely possible to routine. On yachts that carry it, speeds often pass 100 Mbps. Zoom and Teams work the way they do at home.
That was not the old reality:
- Cell signal clusters around settlements. Nassau has strong 4G from both Bahamian carriers, and you can call and text from every inhabited island. Data, though, thins to nothing between the cays and off the uninhabited ones, and the prettiest anchorages sit far from any town.
- The old satellite systems did not fill the gap. Yachts relied on VSAT connections that delivered a few Mbps with enough lag to make a video call unpleasant. They handled email, not a workday.
That island geography is why satellite internet matters more here than in the Med. A Mediterranean route hugs a continuously covered coastline. The Exumas are a 120 mile chain of mostly uninhabited cays with towers only at the settlements.
Starlink internet spread through the crewed Bahamas fleet within a couple of seasons, because it is both faster and far cheaper to run than what it replaced. We still check every boat individually, and the next section explains why.
“Has Wifi” Does Not Always Mean Starlink Internet
A wifi line on a spec sheet can mean 3 different things. It can be a real Starlink setup, a 4G router with a Bahamian SIM, or a system that mostly rebroadcasts marina wifi.
In the Bahamas the difference is not speed, it is geography. A 4G router works in Nassau and dies at the sandbars.
So before we confirm a boat for anyone who plans to work aboard, we put 3 questions to the yacht in writing:
- What backs the wifi? Satellite, cellular, or both. Only satellite holds between the cays.
- Is it included, and is usage capped? Most crewed motor yachts include it. A few operators meter heavy use or cap per-device speeds on the guest network.
- Does it run at anchor and underway? Some plans restrict use in motion. On a typical Exumas week of short hops it rarely matters, but we would rather know than guess.
If working aboard matters to you, say so in your first message to us. We confirm the exact setup in writing with the yacht before you commit, so the answer you plan around is the boat’s answer, not a brochure line.
The Honest Limits, and How Crews Handle Them
No connection at sea is perfect, so plan around 3 known limits rather than discovering them mid-week. All 3 are manageable, and on a well-run boat the crew already manages them daily.
- Heavy squalls pause it, briefly. Light rain has no real effect. A violent tropical downpour can knock satellite internet out for a few minutes, and then it recovers on its own. Bahamas squalls are short, so for a critical call the fix is scheduling around the weather, and crews do exactly that.
- Busy anchorages share the sky. In high season, a crowded anchorage full of boats on the same satellites can slow everyone down. Crews run separate guest and crew networks and can prioritize your device for a call. Asking costs nothing.
- Usage is crew-managed. Some operators cap per-device speeds or meter very heavy streaming, which protects the connection your call depends on. Tell the crew what your week needs on day 1 and they will set the network up around you.

On a yacht with Starlink internet, yes. Speeds at anchor typically reach tens to well over 100 Mbps, and the lag is comparable to home broadband, so Zoom, Teams, and Meet run normally.
On a boat whose wifi is cellular-backed, calls work near Nassau and the settlements and become unreliable between the cays. That is exactly why we confirm the setup first.
Does the wifi work in the Exumas?
With Starlink satellite internet, yes, including at anchorages far from any settlement. Only a heavy squall pauses it for a few minutes, and it recovers on its own. Cellular data in the Exumas clusters around inhabited spots like Staniel Cay and George Town and thins to nothing in between.
