Sailing is the national sport of the Bahamas. Every April, handbuilt wooden sloops race in George Town’s Family Island Regatta, and the same waters that made this country a nation of sailors are what make it a serious charter destination: steady easterly trades and a 120-mile island chain whose lee side gives you real wind on flat, sheltered water.

A crewed sailing yacht is the slow-travel way to do the Exumas. Sails up between anchorages, a captain who reads the water by its color, and evenings on the hook where the only light is the boat’s and the stars.

Broker insight

The Exumas are one of the few places in the world where you get real wind on flat water. The whole chain sits on a bank: go east and you're in 1,000 feet of ocean, stay west in the lee and you can sail all day in sheltered water without ever passing 30 feet. A monohull handles that beautifully. You just plan anchorages around your keel, and that's exactly what your captain is for.

Why Charter a Sailing Yacht in the Bahamas?

  • Real wind on flat water: the bank side of the Exuma chain gives you steady trades without the swell
  • Sailing is the national sport: handbuilt wooden sloops still race every April at the Family Island Regatta in George Town
  • Mostly all-inclusive: the sail fleet here bundles food, drinks, and fuel into one rate, unlike most Bahamas motor yachts
  • Quiet nights: sails down, engine off, anchored somewhere with no lights but your own

How Much Does a Bahamas Sailing Charter Cost?

Crewed sailing catamarans in the Bahamas mostly charter all-inclusive: food, drinks, and fuel in one rate, starting around $25,000-$40,000 per week for 4-8 guests. Add the Bahamas’ 14% charter tax. That all-inclusive model is one genuine advantage of the sail fleet here; most Bahamas motor yachts run plus-expenses with a 30-40% APA instead.

Where to Go on Your Bahamas Sailing Charter

The Exuma chain is the classic sailing week: 120 miles of cays with the bank on one side and deep water on the other, so you can sail all day and still anchor in the shallows by evening. Nassau is the usual start, with Eleuthera adding pink-sand beaches on a longer loop, and the Abacos offering the most sheltered sailing of all.

People Also Ask

Do we need sailing experience?

No. Every sailing yacht we book is crewed, with a captain and chef or stew. You can take the helm as much or as little as you like.

Are Bahamas sailing charters all-inclusive?

Mostly yes, which is unusual here: food, drinks, and fuel are bundled into the rate from around $25,000 to $40,000 per week for 4 to 8 guests. The 14% Bahamas charter tax is added on top. See the full cost breakdown.

Sailing yacht or catamaran in the Bahamas?

Most of the Bahamian sail fleet is catamarans, because the shallow banks suit a shallow draft. A monohull keel costs you only the skinniest sandbar anchorages, which your captain plans around. See our catamaran charters.

When is the best time to sail in the Bahamas?

December through April for the steadiest trades and settled weather. If the Family Island Regatta interests you, that is George Town in April.

Where do sailing charters start from?

Nassau for the Exumas, and Marsh Harbour for the Abacos. Ask us what is available for your dates: the sail fleet here is smaller than the motor fleet, so options move fast. See our Bahamas itineraries.
