Central Exumas is a charter location in The Exumas, a yacht charter area in the Bahamas.

The anchorages on Central Exumas:

Fowl Cay Overview

Fowl Cay, situated to the south of Sampson Cay, is one of the most active tourist hubs in the Central Exumas. Tourists from across the world travel to this cay by cruises and private yachts to take in the tranquil scenery of the Exumas and enjoy culinary satisfaction. Although most tourists stay at the nearby Staniel Cay, Fowl Cay is also a perfect getaway island if you have proper bookings.

Fowl Cay has polarizing geography, with shallow waters and intimidating rocks on the southern shore and a deeper area on the northern and northeastern shores.

Navigation and Anchoring

Enter from Exuma Sound and pass between the two Major’s cuts (Little Major Cut and Big Major Cut) and stick to the Fowl Cay shore. On your port side will be North Gaulin Cay that is notorious to have rocky sandbars along its shore. Stay away from these shallow waters and move to the 9-foot waters along Fowl Cay.

Places of Interest In and Around Fowl Cay

According to a legend, the island got its name from a practice where residents of the Exumas kept their chickens (for food) here. It became a tourist hub after a couple bought the island in the 1950s and constructed a villa for their own consumption. It is currently owned by The Stewarts family (since 2007).

You can enjoy snorkeling around the heads beside two unnamed cays off northeast of North Gaulin Cay (Golden Cay). Exploring the Golden Cay may also be worthwhile, where you can spot an old sisal field.

The biggest attraction here is also a stay option. The Fowl Cay Resort offers a complete package including 5-star accommodation, food, and water sports activities. It’s a collection of 6 villas – each with something unique to offer – that can be booked for days at a stretch. You can get more details about the resort on its official website. It has been operating since 2002.

Trivia – The resort has refurnished the villa of the original owners of the cay, which is called the Lindon Villa.

Services

Fowl Cay is also known for Hill House, a full-service restaurant that offers Bahamian and American cuisines. It also has the Fowl Cay Resort, the only resort in the Central Exumas that has pubs and an overall fantastic vibe.
