The Bahamas is the closest place to the United States where the water actually looks like the photographs, and it is built for a motor yacht week: short hops, shallow sandbars, and anchorages you cannot reach any other way.

Here is what keeps our clients coming back, and the 3 things we would tell you on the phone before you book.

More than 700 islands and 2,000 cays, spread over 100,000 square miles. In practice that means you are never committed to one stretch of coast for a week.

The Abacos run 120 miles and suit a slower week, with Marsh Harbour for provisioning and Hope Town for its candy-striped lighthouse. The Exumas are the ones people picture: Staniel Cay for Thunderball Grotto, Big Majors Spot for the swimming pigs, and sandbars that appear and disappear with the tide.

This is the thing that surprises first-time guests. Bahamian water sits over white sand in 3 to 15 feet for miles, so it reads as a lit-up turquoise rather than the deep blue you get in Greece or the Riviera.

It changes the day. You can see fish, rays and turtles from the deck without getting in. Anchoring is visual, so the crew put you exactly where you want to be. And it is the reason watersports are so easy here: warm, shallow, protected water is a far friendlier place to learn to foil or to put children on a jet ski than open Mediterranean swell.

The Bahamas is not year-round sunshine, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not chartered here in January.

From March through the summer it is reliably warm with steady trade winds, and that is the window we recommend. December and January can be cool and breezy, and a front coming through will flatten a day. We would rather move a client to March than sell them a Christmas week that disappoints, and we will say so on the phone.

Summer is hot and quiet, with the best water clarity of the year. Hurricane season runs June through November, which is worth understanding rather than fearing: charters are routinely rerouted around weather, and your contract covers it.

Visibility here runs to 100 feet and beyond. Andros has the third largest barrier reef in the world, Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island drops over 600 feet, and the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park has been protected since 1958, which is why the reef there still looks the way reefs used to.

Here is the part worth knowing before you book: plenty of yachts offer rendezvous diving, where a local operator meets the boat. Far fewer carry compressors, tanks and a dive-qualified crew member so you can dive straight off the swim platform. We keep a running list of the ones that do, because they are genuinely scarce and they book out early. Ask for them by name.

Nassau is 50 minutes from Miami and under 3 hours from New York. Nowhere else this close to the United States has water like this.

One piece of advice we give every American client: fly in and join the boat at Nassau or Staniel Cay rather than crossing from Florida on the yacht. Crossing the Gulf Stream eats 2 days of a 7 day charter and lands you in Bimini, which is not what anyone came for. Flying in puts you in the Exumas on day one.

Private and charter flights into Staniel Cay and Georgetown are straightforward, and we will coordinate the timing with the captain so the boat is waiting when you land.

Bonefishing on the Andros flats is world-famous, and the deep water off the Exuma Sound holds mahi, wahoo, tuna and marlin. Most Bahamian fishing splits into 4 kinds: fly fishing, bonefishing, bottom fishing and deep sea, and a good crew will set up a different one each day.

The boat matters less than the crew here. What separates a decent fishing day from a great one is a deckhand who knows the flats, keeps the tackle right and can cook what you land the same evening. Ask us who is running a strong fishing program this season and we will point you to the right boat.

Bahamian cooking is African, Caribbean and European at once, and it is built on seafood. Conch turns up as fritters, as salad cured in lime, and cracked and fried. Rock lobster is in season from August to March. Ask for a beach barbecue at least once, because doing it properly, with the tender ferrying everything ashore, is something only a crewed yacht makes easy.

On drinks, the Bahama Mama and the Goombay Smash are the ones people order, and Sky Juice, which is gin, coconut water and condensed milk, is the one they remember. Tell us how you like to eat when you inquire and we will match you to a chef, not just a boat.

The Bahamas has plenty of tourists. It also has hundreds of cays with nobody on them, and the difference between those two experiences is entirely whether you have a boat.

Shallow draft is the reason. Much of the Exuma bank is under 10 feet, which rules out a lot of deeper yachts and leaves the best sandbars and cuts to boats set up for it. That is one of the things we check first when we shortlist for you, because a beautiful yacht with too much draft will spend your week anchored further out than you wanted.

The Bahamas fleet runs from a 120ft motor yacht to a 185ft superyacht, and most of our Bahamas business happens in that range rather than at the smaller end. A bigger platform means more speed to cover the Exuma chain, more deck space for the toys, and a crew large enough to run the boat and look after guests at the same time.

One thing worth knowing: boats move between the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands depending on where the bookings are, so a yacht listed as Bahamas in January may not be here in April. Knowing where a boat actually is, and whether she is genuinely free, takes access to her calendar rather than a listing page. That is the part we do.

A Bahamas week is a watersports week, and the fleet here is built for it. Expect seabobs, foils, jet skis, paddleboards and a decent tender as standard rather than as extras, plus swim platforms that put you in the water without a ladder.

The marinas match. Albany, Baker’s Bay and Nassau’s superyacht berths are as good as anything in the Caribbean, so you can start or finish the week somewhere polished and spend the middle of it alone on a sandbar. That combination is the real argument for a motor yacht here.
